Last week, schools throughout the Archdiocese of Melbourne celebrated Catholic Education Week. The week was an opportunity for Thomas Carr College to join all 334 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese to celebrate our distinctive Catholic identity, our achievements, and the role our school plays within our parish and local communities.

The theme for this year’s celebrations was ‘Forming lives of faith, hope and love in the light of Christ.’

Catholic education seeks to provide students with a high-quality education that is inspired by the example of Jesus Christ and fosters the development of the whole person, forming individuals with more than just skills, but with the virtues to live life as transformative agents in our communities.
Due to the hard work and dedication of the staff in the Religious Education Learning Area the week was filled with various events aimed at promoting the values of faith, hope, and love within our College community.

One of the highlights of the week was the daily quiz, where students were tested on their knowledge of Catholic teachings and beliefs. This proved to be a fun and engaging way to encourage students to learn more about their faith. The Middle School classroom displays also played a key role in the week’s activities. Students created beautiful displays that brought our Catholic teachings and the themes of faith, hope, and love to life. Illustrating their depth of knowledge of the Scripture as well as inspiring their peers to embrace these values in their daily lives.

In addition to celebrating with the students, the staff were also recognised and thanked for their hard work and dedication with a special morning tea last Thursday.

Our student leaders also attended Catholic Education Week celebrations conducted by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools on Friday 17 March. Our day commenced with the Mass of St Patrick for Schools, celebrated by Archbishop Peter Comensoli. During His homily His Grace spoke of God’s trust in us all. Our part is to lean into this trust and let God do the rest by responding simply and humbly in God’s entrustment with six simple words: ‘Jesus I have trust in you’.
Prior to lunch the student leaders made their way to the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, under which Archbishop Thomas Carr is buried, to discover more about our College Patron. This was followed by the Young Speakers Colloquium for secondary school students, where students and staff heard how Fr Robert Galea, echoing the words of His Grace, has put his trust in God and turned ‘his mess’ into a message: God’s message. This powerful event demonstrated the transformative power of faith and the importance of hope and love in overcoming life’s challenges. Meanwhile our College choir entertained primary school students at the Concert in the Park.
On our way home we quickly visited the Creative Arts Exhibition, which showcased the wonderful artwork of primary and secondary students in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, including the work of Thomas Carr students.

Our celebrations culminated on Sunday 19 March at a Mass celebrated by Fr Jude with student and staff participation from all of the Schools in the St James the Apostle Parish to commemorate Catholic Education Week.

Overall, Catholic Education Week was a huge success, with students and staff members coming together to celebrate their faith and promote the values of faith, hope, and love within the Thomas Carr College Community.
