On Friday 26 July, our staff, students and their grandparents came together in a special gathering to recognise the role grandparents and older carers in our lives play in families, workplaces, communities, and in each of our hearts and minds.
Through our Catholic faith, it was a great time to enhance our understanding of the part that older individuals play in nurturing and building a society made of love. We also recognise and support the efforts of every community to form bonds between generations by recognising the wisdom and experience that comes with the advancing years.
For this Grandparents Day, Pope Francis had chosen a line from Psalm 71:9. “Do not cast me off in my old age.” This verse reminds us that we are to cherish the qualities of our grandparents and all older people, recognising the contribution they make to the life of the Church.
We celebrate Grandparents’ Day at this time every year to remember not only our grandparents, but the grandparents of Jesus, Mary’s parents St Joachim and St Anne. They raised a child that was blessed to be the mother of Jesus and the Church.
