Year 8 Reflection Day

31 October 2024

Year 8 students began the Advent term by visiting the Werribee Open Range Zoo to take part in a day of reflection. The day was guided by Laudato Si, the second encyclical of Pope Francis, focusing on care for our common home. Students considered the ways in which they currently contribute to environmental degradation and global warming as well as working with the team and Werribee Open Range Zoo to learn about strategies that can minimise their impact on our common home. Students from Year 8 share their experiences from the day below.

Our class, 8 Aqua, went to Werribee Zoo, and it was such an awesome day. We got to see so many interesting animals like lions, giraffes, and zebras. While we were walking around, we started thinking about how amazing it is that God made all these special animals, each one so different in its own way. It made us realise how important it is to take care of them and the world we live in. The trip was not just about seeing animals it reminded me how much God loves His creation and how we should help protect it too.

Visiting Werribee Zoo was a fun and unique way of learning and reflecting on the letter that Pope Francis wrote in 2015 called Laudato Si. In this encyclical, Pope Francis showed the significance of taking care of the environment and also highlighted the interconnectedness of all creation. Pope Francis urged people to understand how we were responsible for taking care of Earth as well as taking urgent actions towards climate change. At the zoo, we engaged in many activities that showcased Pope Francis’ message on valuing and protecting nature. The different animals and their homes show the beauty of God’s creation and remind us of our responsibilities; seeing these creatures in their habitats fortify the Pope’s idea about how caring for the environment is crucial for the future of our planet.
