The Model of the United Nations

On Friday 2 August, a group of twelve Year 12 Indonesian students attended the Model of United Nations program in North Melbourne. Students were given a country to represent which included the United States of America, India, and Estonia. The students had to research the countries and their stand on Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development: Harnessing the Benefits – Safeguarding Human Rights. Students were expected to debate, negotiate, vote by adding ideas, reasons, and opinions in the Indonesian language only.

The Year 12 students were incredibly involved and represented the individual country well. The United States of America asserted its power from the start of the day and Estonia was very firmly protecting its GNP to ensure they were not taken advantage of by bigger countries. India took a harsh stand on Equal Rights for Women, even though the rest of the world did not condone it.

It was a great opportunity to connect and network with students from the other school. Their discussions inside the room continued into their breaks, and resulted in an allegiance between America and Mexico and with support from other countries was successful in amending a clause brought forward from Rwanda.

Students enjoyed the day, and they were happy to take part in this program. Their favourite word of the day was “Lolos”, which means “to pass on”, which is what the students involved, hope to do for the students who will follow in their footsteps. It was a great day for the students and staff involved and it has built student’s confidence to use the Indonesian language beyond the classroom.
